Berkeley Moshav to become first urban Jewish cohousing community
By 2027, residents are expected to be welcomed to the first urban Jewish cohousing community called Berkeley Moshav. Founder and community manager stated that this idea has been in the works for almost a decade. After reconnecting with his Jewish roots and Judaism and being introduced to the concept of cohousing while being in graduate school at UC Berkeley he started developing this idea. He wanted to merge together people of all different backgrounds to create a community for daily living.
The Jewish experience is meant to be one that is shared so living in one of these houses can create a more meaningful and fulfilling life for members of Judaism. Expressing their identities in a communal setting can help maintain the tradition of these practices.
The community will feature 3,500 feet of indoor shared space and 5,000 square feet of outdoor place. These are placed where members are able to share meals together and have events. There are also guest suites available. Out of the 36 homes 29 have already been claimed by future residents with plans of creating rental options in the future. The 29 people who have already had a spot have been helping to contribute to the processes of creating this home. In return, this makes the space truly welcoming for the community making it a great environment to express your religious beliefs.
