Learning Outcome 3 : Active Reading

Learning outcome 3 highlights learning how to actively read and take that information and use it towards your work. The annotations that I do whilst reading started to teach me how to think more critically about what I am reading. I will underline important things I need to remember and after I will summarize what I read on the side of the paper. This keeps me more engaged while I am reading and makes sure I am not reading passively and miss main, important points. Overall annotating deepens my overall understanding of the texts I have read this semester.

Another thing that I learned while critically reading is that you start to question the ideas of the authors. Does this point support their claim as much as they thought it would? or how could I change their claim to make it more modern? As you start to read more text and start to annotate more and more you get into the authors mind and how they were thinking while writing their experts.

One portion of learning outcome 3 is a formal reading response. In the moment I didn’t know it but writing these annotations helped me out tremendously when writing journals. When I was looking for something I needed to write about it was easy to find and easy to comprehend. These responses also gave me a chance to connect what I have been reading about.

Shown above is my annotations for Fukuyama “Human Dignity”. I used this information in my essay 3

Shown above are my annotations for Turkles “Empathy Diaries”. We used this work throughout the whole semester. I learned that without annotated readings it was very hard for one to find specific quotes in the readings. It was also hard to keep track of the authors main ideas.
