Professor William Drummond’s journey through journalism

Feb 20, 2025

William Drummond started as a UC Berkeley student with no particular career path in mind and accidentally stumbled into journalism. In the 60’s the department was small but it was one of the most defining and influential periods in the campus’s history. William also went to Columbia and it provided him with an initial exposure of news. He got the chance to interview MArtin Luther King Jr. By 1967 he was working for the Los Angeles Times working with heavy subject matters like black nationalism and the black panther movement, he described it as the most fun of his life. After this job opportunity he applied to work a fellowship with the White House. He was appointed by Ford and eventually became associate press secretary to Jimmy Carter.

In 1983 he was asked to set up a radio training program by the dean of the journalism school at UC Berkeley. He describes it as the perfect job.

Something cool that I just noticed today was that every article comes with an option to listen to this article. This is nice because it creates more of an incentive for people to obtain the information from these articles.
