Countering
For this journal I decided to use my interview that I did with the artistic director of SPAC. This is because it is one of the main sources that I will be referring to in my essay and she provided me with insight that I haven’t thought of yet. That is, there are more things that come into play for programming than just including diverse cultures, there is money and timing involved. From the interview I took the quote “We want to provide… something that everybody will enjoy. And also a lot of the times, something to push our audience a little bit that maybe they won’t see on their own.” In the interview Dreya relates to Harris’s idea of arguing the other side. She talks about negotiating between conflicting ideas which are audience satisfaction and exposure to underrepresented cultures. Instead of picking one or the other Dreya highlights putting SPAC in a position of doing both by experimenting while also finding a median. She understands the skepticism by anticipating it initially. I can relate this to my project because I can use her knowledge of arts programming while also acknowledging that her strategies may not be able to translate to all arts organizations.
