Workshop Experience Reflection
Before class today I read my classmates’ most recent journal entry when they reflected on my piece. I read this work first because I knew that when they are not talking to me face-to-face they are able to say things that may be hard to say out loud. I noticed everyone was being very positive when reflecting on my work and when giving me feedback it was constructive and worded in a way that respected my feelings. These words helped a lot and it validated me going through processes of interviews with people who were closely related to my topic, which was extremely hard.
In class today I read my feature creature out loud and myself and the whole class reflected on the work that I have written. We first started with “What does my piece do well?” I received feedback from my fellow classmates including their thoughts on my string headline. They also said that I, overall, had a well written piece that had flow, was interesting, and no repetition occurred. They also stated that I had interviewed the perfect people for this piece and the quotes that I had picked out from their interview worked in favor of my piece. Doing this allowed me to advance my story without outright stating what they mean by their quotes. One thing that I also did well was adding the necessary background information to my story. This gave context to people who aren’t familiar with UNE and/or The Maine Mariners.
One of the main points that people wanted me to work on was incorporating student voices. This was something that could progress “how does this partnership benefit UNE?” part of the piece. I have since gotten quotes from one of the interns that work with The Maine Mariners. I can now see how important adding that to my piece was. Another thing that I needed to work on was word count. When I was writing it I tried to keep it as simple as possible and that reflected in my word count. I now see when I am given a word count I have to stick to that count because that is what people are expecting. I could also elaborate on “what does UNE get out of this partnership?” by adding Women’s in sports night. Free tickets to Maine Mariners game. Opportunity for MBA programs to grow. Higher chance of getting a job for students and their future path.
