UC Berkeley Approves Korean Studies Major

UC Berkeley Approves Korean Studies Major

March 24, 2025

After a proposal for a Korean studies major was offered to the UC Berkeley campus it was accepted by the Executive Committee of the College of Letter and Science last month. The proposal was made in response to student interest in the expansion of major offerings in the EALC department. The approval process could take anywhere from a few months to a year. With the dependency that there are a few levels of review. The addition of the new major will follow the structure of previous other majors in the department. With there already being a major for Chinese and Japanese and an undergraduate minor of Korean the upvote of adding the major was extremely popular. Not only does it already fit seamlessly into what UC Berkeley has to offer it also shows the richness of Korea’s contributions.

The whole process is exciting for the school and students within it. With the prioritizing undergraduate and graduate programs for Korean over the last decade getting to enroll student into this major finally is very exciting news.
