Thousands in Berkeley join nationwide day of protest against the Trump administration
On Saturday, thousands of protestors marched along Sacramento Avenue in Berkeley. Protestors did this as part of the nationwide Hands Off movement in opposition of the Trump administration. Protestors crowded sidewalks and medians of the Avenue at the BART station. The local police department decided at the last minute to close off the street to car traffic due to unanticipated crowds. The protest lasted 1 hour going from 1 pm to 2pm.
Alongside with thousands of other protests nationwide on Saturday was the one in Berkeley. This has been one of the largest protests since Trump took office in January, according to organizers. 3 million people contributed to the 1,300 events.
Many attendees, like David Kato, were protesting for the first time in person. Pastor Lynn spoke about threats to the US institutions and stressed the need to defend democracy. Eventually, the protest moved from North Berekley BART to Fourth Street, joining other similar events.
